Hong Kong transport

Hong Kong Buses
Buses cover all areas of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Kowloon Motor Bus, New World First Bus and Citybus cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. New Lantao Bus covers Lantau Island and Long Win Bus operates services to north Lantau and the airport. Destinations are shown in English and Chinese on the front of the bus. Fares are low and based on distance traveled with exact change required.

Hong Kong Minibuses
Red minibuses operate on routes where passengers can alight anywhere. Green minibuses operate on specific routes. Fares for minibuses are a little higher than regular buses; minibuses will not stop if full.

Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
The MTR operates from 6am – 1am, quickly and efficiently. There are six lines that connect most places. Fares are based on the distance traveled and one and three day passes are available (2881 8888).

Airport Express: running between the Hong Kong International Airport and Central;

Island Line: running between Sheung Wan and Chai Wan;

Tsuen Wan Line: running between Central and Tsuen Wan;

Kwun Tong Line: running between Yau Ma Tei and Tiu Keng Ling;

Tseung Kwan O Line: running between North Point and Po Lam;

the Tung Chung Line: running between Central and Tung Chung.

Hong Kong Open Top Buses
Open top buses (bus 15C) run from Star Ferry Piers in Central to Peak Tram Lower Terminus from 10am – 11.45pm.

Hong Kong Taxis
Taxis are controlled and run on a meter. Extra charges are payable for tunnels and bridge tolls and for luggage handling. Passenger must wear seatbelts. Red taxis operate in most of Hong Kong, except for Tung Chung Road and the south side of Lantau Island; Green taxis serve the New Territories; and Blue taxis operate on Lantau Island. Taxis cannot pick up or drop off passengers in areas marked with double yellow lines. If you have a problem with the taxi write down the taxi driver’s name and license plate number as shown on the Taxi Driver and lodge your complaint.

Hong Kong Trams
The trams run along North Hong Kong Island and one branch line to Happy Valley. Trams run from 6am – midnight (2548 7102).
