Kong celebrates in style
and has events and festivals all
year.
Chinese New Year
The
Chinese New Year takes
place about one month
after the Western New
Year. Plenty of noise
and lots of red to scare
off the evil spirits
and fireworks light the
sky. Banks, business
and some shops close
during the celebrations.
Dragon Boat Races
The
race recreates the rescue
of the Chinese dissident
and poet Ch’u
Yuan who jumped into
the river Mi Lo to protest
and an attempted rescue
by villages from their
boats. Now a series of
very colourful races
that take place on the
fifth day of the fifth
lunar month.
Festival of the Hungry
Ghosts
The ghosts come
out of hiding during
the seventh lunar moth
and the festival placates
the ghost by providing
offerings to them.
Mid Autumn Festival
Celebrated on the 15th
day of the 8th month.
Most people celebrate
by watching the full
moon and eat specially
made moon cakes.
